Spring brings with it warmer temperatures, budding flowers and trees, and rain. While we hope everyone is enjoying the longer days, keep in mind that Spring showers can bring more than spring flowers. Xtreme Home Improvement wants to remind everyone to keep an eye out for severe weather. Spring storm damage comes from flooding rains, hail and wind. The key to avoiding damage is being informed and prepared in advance.
Take the time to review your insurance policy with your agent well in advance to be sure you’ll be covered for possible storm damage. Remember that flooding is not covered by your homeowners policy but requires a separate flood insurance policy. You’ll want to make sure your property is protected. A few simple steps will help minimize potential damage to your property.
Perform a Thorough Examination of Your Home
Start by assessing your whole property, inside and out. Is there any damage from winter storms? Do you see excessive condensation near ducts or window openings? Identify anything and everything that may require repairs, from loose gutters and missing shingles to insulation that needs to be replaced. The key to good storm preparation is to know and understand your hazards:
Inspect Siding and Roof – The siding and roof are your first line of defense against wind, rain, and hail. Carefully check the siding and roof of your home for any potential damage and have the damage repaired. If there are loose shingles or cracks etc., your home will be vulnerable to leaks and water damage. It is usually safer and more effective to hire a professional to do the inspection.
Check and Clean Your Gutters – Be sure all downspouts and drains are clear from debris and adequately direct water away from the foundation. The area around the house should be graded properly to direct water away from the foundation. Over time lawns and driveways can gradually deteriorate or erode, changing the way water flows and puddles on your property.
Check Your Windows – Ensure your window wells can properly drain if filled up quickly. Make sure windows are secure and caulked properly. If a window is drafty, it’s a sign that glass is cracked or broken, or caulking/weather stripping is worn out. You should consider replacing any window that shows these signs.
Get the Basement Ready – The first line of defense against a water-filled basement is most likely your sump pump. Inspect your sump pump and all its parts to make sure it is working properly and efficiently. Keep your sump pump clean and free of debris. If your sump pump is constantly running, it’s a good idea to clean it regularly as buildup of debris can occur. Maintenance and inspection should take place annually. Also, if a severe storm is predicted in your area and your basement is prone to flooding, ensure valuable items are moved up off the floor.
After a Storm
When the storm is over, it is important to know WHAT to do, as well as what NOT to do. Check your home and property as soon as possible. Severe storms can leave behind debris and dangerous conditions. Always use caution and practice common sense. If your neighborhood has been damaged, check to make sure that your neighbors are safe. Keep an eye out for downed power lines, debris, and other hazards.
- Check for damage (structural, or damage to water, gas, electrical and sewer lines).
- Make sure no flooding has occurred in the basement. If there is water, remove wet contents immediately – mold can develop within 24-48 hours.
- Clean and disinfect everything touched by floodwaters.
- Never try to remove large fallen trees yourself.
