The terms “remodeling” and “renovating” get kicked around a lot and are used interchangeably, however the two are different approaches to altering the current state of a structure or property. It’s very important to know the difference when it comes to describing the work you want done to your home. It is also important to know the difference between the two to distinguish which option is best for you. So what’s the difference?
Renovation – refers to updating an existing structure. To renovate is to make something better or like new again, such as refinishing the bathroom tub or adding new cabinets and hardware to the kitchen. Adjectives such as “refresh,” “repair,” “restore,” and “revive” all apply to renovation efforts. Old designs are not drastically made over, they are simply updated to create a more modern or contemporary feeling within the home. Renovations don’t normally require any real structural work, and are almost always less expensive and time-consuming than remodeling.
Remodeling – refers to altering a structure in such a way that total space transformation results. Two reasons to remodel are for use and preference. If “use”, then the functionality of a space is changed. If “preference”, remodeling is done to change designs or aesthetics. If you’re adding a new addition to your home, you are changing the structure and therefore remodeling the building. Other examples include installing a kitchen island, taking out a wall to expand a living room or master bedroom, turning the space above the garage into a functional apartment, and so on. Remodeling frequently involves changes to plumbing and electrical wiring among other alterations. If you add carpet, siding, and a ceiling to your basement (effectively making it a finished basement), that’s remodeling.
What’s Right For You? – Determining whether remodeling or renovating is right for your home depends on many factors, including budget and overall lifestyle. If you want to update your kitchen and bathrooms, even the lightest renovations such as fresh coats of paint and new fixtures might be enough. If you’re looking to completely redo the upstairs of your home now that the kids are out of the house, you’re looking at a serious remodeling project. Think about what’s best for your needs and budget, and what adds the most value before making a decision.
